The Importance of Sunscreen

Nothing is better than being outdoors! The fresh air, beautiful sunshine and amazing sights can really do a lot for a person’s health and well being. But it is important to remember to apply ample amount of sunscreen whenever you are outside for long periods of time. Overexposure to sunlight can harm skin and cause numerous hazards like sunburn, premature aging, wrinkling and, even worse, skin cancer like melanoma. The sunscreen I have been using is Elta MD UV Shield 46, but there are many different types to choose from. Why Too Much Sun Is Harmful

Although a bit of sun provides us with beneficial vitamin D, too much of it can be harmful to us if we do not protect it with the right sunscreen. That is because sunlight has ultraviolet (also known as UV) rays, as well as other rays like UVA, UVC and UVB. All together, these rays can damage our precious skin, which is the body’s largest organ. UVA rays are the leading cause of premature skin aging and are around throughout the day, and they also contribute to skin cancer. UVB rays are most intense at around 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are the ones that cause sunburn and skin cancer, including melanoma – which is the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

As the number one cause of death from skin disease, Melanoma can develop when a person is exposed to sun for prolonged periods of time or ultraviolet radiation, and is more prevalent among those that have fair skin. As you get older, so does your risk to develop melanoma, which is why it is always important to use some type of sunscreen everyday.

Other risks for developing melanoma include: living in climates that area always sunny or in high altitude locations; one or more really bad sunburns during childhood that result in blisters; using tanning beds and other tanning-related devices that expose you to UV rays; and other activities that lead to prolonged exposure to strong sunlight, including jobs that require one to work in the hot sun for most of the day.

Even though it is not as common as other cancers, melanoma is actually increasing and affecting more people than ever. And it is not just older people, either; it is also developing in young, healthy people who did not use sunscreen to protect their skin.

And although increased exposure to UV radiation occurs during summer and peak daylight, they are also very dangerous in the winter. Harmful sunrays can reflect off of snow and water, which is why it’s just as important to wear sunscreen during the winter as it is in the summer.

How Does Sunscreen Work?

Sunscreen can protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays since it is made up of several ingredients that when combined help prevent UV radiations from penetrating the skin. Sunscreen can vary in their ability to protect against both UVA and UVB rays, with a sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor which measures how well the sunscreen protects your skin from rays) of 15 higher a great choice for protecting against UVB. So since it takes 20 minutes of unprotected skin to get red from the sun, using something that has an SPF of 15 is supposed to prevent reddening of your skin 15 times longer or about five hours. And as you get a sunscreen with a higher SPF, that protection number goes up.

It is wise to pick a broad-spectrum sunscreen since it protects against UVB rays and UVA rays. And depending on what type of outdoor activity you plan on participating in, you should also get a waterproof brand if you know that you will be sweating a lot or going swimming. You should also buy a special face moisturizer for everyday wear that contains some sort of SPF (usually 15 or higher) to protect your face from wrinkles and premature aging.

And if you have sensitive skin, buy one that does not have para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA); read the labels to see what’s in them. If you have oily skin that’s prone to acne, be careful on which brand you choose since many might cause breakouts. It is best to go with a water-based option.

When To Apply Sunscreen

It is recommended that you apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before going outside or being exposed to direct sunlight so that it can properly absorb into your skin. Also, make sure to reapply it after you go swimming or after you have been perspiring too much. And if you work outside, you should always remember to keep reapplying it over time and wear protective clothing.
